Synaptic¢¥ Endings in Medullary Pyramidal Tract in Rat

Abstract
The fine structures of medullary pyramidal tract of the rat were examined electron microscopically.
1, The subpial neurons, which had not been reported, were observed beneath the ve tral ,covering of pyramidal tract, where they were singly or in a few cell groups.
The dendritic processes of these neurons were not only present under the pia, mater butalso extended into the pyramidal tract to form the intrapyramidal septa with glial processes, and some of their branches could be seen among the pyramidal fibers.
The cell bodies and their processes made many synapses under the pia mater and i l the septa, but the origin of axon terminals formed these synapses could not be verified.
2. Most of pyramidal unmyelinated axons were fine and unsheathed, but the peculiar large-sized axons that is more than 1 pm in diameter were observed frequently. hey contained many neurotubules and subneurilemmal electron-dense material, and some of them had small clear round vesicles in one side of swollen portion and sometimes showed branching patterns and synapses.
These findings suggest that the dendrites and the axons other than primary motor axons are present in medullary pyramidal tract.
